Whittakers is an exclusive 25 lot development near the entrance to Pender Harbour in coastal British Columbia. The property offers several distinct site conditions – narrow peninsula, upland meadow and rocky bluff. Nine different ‘prototype’ homes were designed to address the different topographic, view and vehicle access conditions.
The pictured house is the show home at Whittakers and sits on a west-facing site on the peninsula. A split-level entry addresses the steep site conditions and one moves down into the common areas much like entering a sailing ship. The character of the home finds its precedent in the work of Greene & Greene – two California architect brothers practicing over a century ago. The Japanese influences of shallow roof slopes, broad eaves and exposed timberwork fit perfectly into this rural, west-coast setting.
